Meet the People
ARC has attracted many bright and creative individuals. The staff is diverse with many years of combined experience in stove design, teaching, laboratory testing, combustion engineering, materials development, data analysis, field studies, international business and development, mechanical engineering, publication design, and stove implementation.
Dean Still, Executive Director, and the staff of ARC have made significant contributions to growing concerns related to indoor air pollution from household energy use.
Aprovecho's Staff includes:
- Dr. Larry Winiarski, Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering, Technical Director - Dr. Winiarski invented the rocket stove and design principles which have been instrumental in improving combustion and heat transfer efficiency. His inventions are utilized in stove projects around the world.
- Dean Still, M.A. Clinical Research Methodology, Executive Director - Dean has been overseeing operations and doing research and development of improved cooking and heating technologies since 1989. He has published many books and articles in this field.
- Damon Ogle, B.S. Mining Engineering, Research Director - Damon is a retired engineer with a solid foundation and understanding of thermodynamics and stove design principles.
- Sandra Moen, Business Manager - Sandra has over 25 years of business experience. She oversees all financial and administrative aspects of ARC.
- Nordica MacCarty, B.S. Mechanical Engineering, Laboratory Manager - Nordica has an in-depth knowledge of stove design, testing protocol, emissions monitoring equipment and data analysis.
- John Page, B.A. in Economics, Research Assistant - John provides network support for ARC and is an expert at analyzing and troubleshooting. His strength is in devising innovative and practical solutions for a wide range of problems by fabricating devices and structures.
- Dr. Alan Berick, PhD Nuclear Physics - Dr. Berick has extensive experience in heat transfer analysis obtained while working in the aerospace industry, and in designing scientific instrumentation used in research labs.
Aprovecho's Field Staff includes:
- Dr. Mouhsine Serrar, Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering,- Dr. Serrar worked as Technical Director of a commercial project in India for the Shell Foundation.
- Mike Hatfield, B.A. Philosophy, Consultant - Mike has been with ARC for ten years and has done many trainings in Central America, Africa and Asia. He is one of the designers of the popular “Justa” griddle stove.
- Mark Witt, Mechanical Engineer, Consultant - Developed an inexpensive fan stove with very low emissions.
- Peter Scott, Consultant - Peter has traveled extensively and works with GTZ in Africa and Central America and is responsible for many successful introductions of institutional and rocket stoves in Uganda, Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, and Kenya.
- Ken Goyer, Consultant - Ken is active in development work and trainings in El Salvador, Mexico, Uganda and the Philippines. He is the director of AIDAfrica, a non-profit working in the IDP refugee camps in Uganda and the Sudan.
- Sebastian Africano, B. A. Economics, Consultant - Sebastian holds a degree in international business, managed a micro-enterprise market stove project in Honduras, and worked with International Lifeline Fund in the Sudan.
