Position: Emissions Engineer 1

Aprovecho Research Center, an award winning 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, needs to hire an Emissions Engineer 1 to support growth opportunities.

For 25 years Aprovecho Research Center (ARC) has been at the forefront with a small group of laboratories, university departments and NGO’s that have focused on providing safe and efficient biomass-burning stoves for the world’s poor, 3 billion people who cook over open fires. ARC staff and consultants have worked in almost 1/3 of the world’s countries to provide standards, laboratory testing, training, consulting and testing equipment for cookstoves. Newly focused attention by the US State Department, the UN World Food Programme, the UN Foundation, and the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves has created opportunities for ARC to increase its outreach.

ARC needs an Emissions Engineer 1 to a) primarily support its emissions monitoring equipment program, and b) provide field education and training, stove testing, stove design and related activities for international clients, often located in a lesser-developed country (LDC). The primary focus of the job involves precision fabrication, calibration, and service support of custom emissions monitoring equipment. The balance of time will be spent doing lab tests and design of stoves, travel to international job sites, writing articles for publication, and other tasks as assigned. Someone with a recent EE, ChE, ME, or similar engineering degree is preferred. ARC provides a lot of on-the-job training, so if you have most of the skills desired ARC will help you learn the rest.

This position reports to the laboratory manager. It is a full-time position but the hours are flexible. Starting salary will be $2,000 a month and a generous per diem is paid for international travel. Insurance benefits are not provided at this time. At the discretion of the Search Committee, ARC reserves the right to extend the search deadline or cancel this search completely.

This position has to be filled by someone special – someone who is technically and scientifically capable, is well organized, has specific workbench skills, is comfortable in LDC’s, and can adapt to the exciting and challenging world of NGO’s and international projects. Here’s your opportunity to be part of a talented and dedicated team that is working hard to reduce air pollution, prevent smoke-related diseases, improve fuel efficiency and increase the safety of women cooking in poor countries worldwide.

Applications are due between now and March 31, 2012.  E-mail your cover letter, resume and brief supporting documents to: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Starting date is flexible but would ideally be before June 1, 2012.
